PromotingAll-RoundEducationforGirlspresentsthehistoryofHeepYunnSchool,oneoftheoldestgirls’schoolsinHongKong.AmalgamatedfromtwoBritishmissionschoolsfoundedinthe1880sfordestitutegirlsanddaughtersofChristianparents,andrenamedHeepYunnSchoolin1936,theinstitutionhaswitnessedandrespondedtothedramaticchangesofHongKongovertheyears.BythetimeoftheoutbreakoftheSecondWorldWar,HeepYunnhadexpandedtoofferafullChinesemiddleschoolcourseforgirlsbaseduponChristianprinciplesofall-roundeducation.TheschoolexpandedrapidlyafterthewarandbecameabilingualinstitutiontomeetthedemandforEnglishlanguageeducation.EventuallyEnglishwouldbecometheprimarymediumofinstructionsoonaftertheintroductionofnine-yearuniversaleducationin1978.HeepYunnstrivestoprovideafull-fledgedall-roundeducationinthemidstofpoliticalandeducationreforms.Theschooloptedtoswitchitsstatusfromagovernment-aidedschooltoadirectsubsidyschemeschoolintheearly2010ssoastoretainalargerdegreeofautonomy.ThishistoryofHeepYunnSchooldocumentstheconcertedeffortsoftheschoolcouncil,staff,students,alumnae,andparentstoachievetheevolvingvisionsofChristianeducationforgirlsasHongKonggrewfromacolonialtradingporttoaglobalfinancialcentreinthetwenty-firstcentury.
